Best Classcraft Alternatives in 2026
When Classcraft was discontinued in 2024, thousands of teachers lost their favorite classroom tool overnight. A
petition gathered
tens of thousands of signatures, but it wasn't enough โ Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) shut it down for good.
If you're one of those teachers still searching for a replacement, you're not alone. The challenge is that most
alternatives are just simple point trackers. They don't have the game mechanics that made Classcraft special: boss
battles, avatars, superpowers, leveling up, health points, team collaboration, and quests.
I've spent the past two years building ClassMana to fill that gap โ and many teachers now
consider it the spiritual successor to Classcraft. In this article, I'll recap what Classcraft offered, look at what's
out there now, and show you why ClassMana is the closest thing to a true replacement.
What Features Did Classcraft Have?
Before we look at alternatives, let's recap everything Classcraft offered โ so you know exactly what to look for in a
replacement.

Core features
- Point system โ Experience Points (XP) for positive behavior, Health Points (HP) lost for negative behavior, Crystals/Action Points (AP) spent to activate powers, and Gold Pieces (GP) for cosmetic upgrades like armor and pets. All fully customizable by the teacher.
- Powers (Superpowers) โ Students could activate real-world classroom perks by spending crystals (extra time on assignments, notes during quizzes, skipping homework, etc.). Each hero class also had unique RPG abilities โ Guardians absorbed damage, Healers restored HP, Mages recharged crystals โ creating team interdependence. Powers unlocked progressively through leveling, not purchasing.
- Avatar Customization โ Students customized their characters with outfits, weapons, and accessories, unlocked through leveling up.
- Pets โ Collectible companions that students could buy and train with gold.
- Leveling Up โ Reaching XP thresholds (set by the teacher) unlocked new gear, powers, and gold rewards.
- Customizable โ Teachers could customize nearly everything: which behaviors earned or lost points, how many points each was worth, which powers were available, crystal costs, consequences for falling, and more.
- Falling & consequences โ When a student hit 0 HP, they "fell" and faced a random consequence set by the teacher (e.g. write an apology letter, extra assignment). Teammates could intervene to prevent or soften the fall.
Teams & Collaboration
- Teams/Clans โ Students were grouped into teams with assigned roles.
- Team accountability โ Teammates could spend their own resources to protect or heal each other.
- 3 Hero Classes โ Guardian (tank), Healer (support), and Mage (glass cannon) โ each with different stats and a unique role on the team.
Quests
- Personalized Learning Quests โ Story-driven learning adventures with branching paths.
- Marketplace โ Community-shared quest content from other teachers.
Class Tools
- Boss Battles (Formative Review) โ Review games against a monster.

- Random Events (The Riders of Vay) โ Daily mystery events that could grant bonus XP, cause HP loss, or trigger fun scenarios.
- Volume Meter (The Makus Valley) โ Noise monitor for keeping the classroom quiet.
- Countdown (The White Mountain Trek) โ Visual countdown timer.
- Stopwatch (The Forest Run) โ Timer for timed activities.
- Random Picker (The Wheel of Destiny) โ Random student selector.
- Grade Converter (Treasures of Tavuros) โ Convert grades into in-game points.
- Kudos (Shrine of the Ancients) โ Peer-to-peer recognition where students could celebrate each other's achievements.
Platform & Integrations
- Google Classroom & Canvas integration
- Mobile apps โ iOS and Android (Classcraft Go).
- Admin dashboards โ School-wide analytics and early intervention data.
- Multi-language support
That's a lot of features โ and it's exactly why finding a true replacement has been so hard. Most alternatives only
cover a fraction of what Classcraft offered.
ClassMana โ The Closest Alternative to Classcraft

ClassMana was built specifically to replace Classcraft. It's created by a game developer (me!)
who saw teachers struggling after Classcraft disappeared and decided to apply actual game design experience and game
technology to classroom management.
What ClassMana has in common with Classcraft
- Experience points & leveling up โ Students earn experience for positive behavior and level up over time
- Powers (superpowers) โ Students spend mana on real-life classroom perks, like listening to music or getting extra time on a test
- Avatar customization and progression โ Students get a character just like the ones they know from their favorite video games โ fully animated and way more engaging than static images. They customize their look and unlock new gear as they level up (35 levels worth of content โ a year-long motivator)
- Health & strikes โ A balanced consequence system where strikes reduce health. If health hits zero, students must redeem themselves with a positive action
- Gold โ An in-game currency tied to academic achievements and milestones
- Teams โ Group collaboration where students help each other succeed
- Hero types (coming soon) โ RPG-style classes (Wizard, Knight, Ranger, Ninja) with unique strengths, encouraging interdependence
- Boss battles โ Review games where students defeat a monster with correct answers (replaces the classic pop quiz)
- Random events โ Fun mystery activities for brain breaks, class starters, or rewards
- Noise monitor โ A dragon-themed silence challenge that rewards students for quiet behavior
- Multilanguage support โ Available in 30+ languages, making it accessible
- Quests โ Self-paced learning adventures with branching paths, quizzes, and rewards. Over 200 quest maps available!
- Mobile-friendly โ ClassMana is a modern web app that works great on any device โ phone, tablet, or desktop โ with no app install required
- Google Classroom & grade sync (coming soon) โ LMS integration and grade conversion are planned
Where ClassMana improves on Classcraft
- Instant setup โ Sign up and use 6 free teacher tools immediately. No complex configuration needed.
- Animated 3D avatars โ Built with real 3D game technology. Students get fully animated characters that look and feel like the ones they know from their favorite video games โ not static images or AI-generated portraits that never change. With 35 levels of gear to unlock, avatar progression keeps students motivated all year long.
- Free to start โ All instant teacher tools (Monster Battle, Silence Challenge, Mystery Event, Timer, Stopwatch, Random Student Picker) are free.
- Boss battles that feel like a real game โ The Monster Battle uses 3D graphics and animations, so reviewing material feels like playing a video game rather than taking a quiz.

- Quests with a rich editor โ Create learning adventures using a full rich text editor with YouTube embedding, image uploads, and quizzes built right in. No clunky form fields โ just write your quest content the way you want it.

- Silence Challenge that went viral โ The dragon-themed noise monitor went viral on TikTok, with one video surpassing a million views. Students genuinely love it.

- Active development โ New features are being added regularly based on teacher feedback.
What About Other Alternatives?
Since Classcraft shut down, teachers have been searching for replacements everywhere โ from established edtech platforms
to indie passion projects. But if you've tried them, you've probably noticed the same thing: none of them come close to
what Classcraft actually was.
Established platforms that aren't real alternatives
You'll often see names like ClassDojo, LiveSchool, ClassPoint, Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket,
Gimkit, Quizlet, Classwise, Hero by School Mint, PBIS Rewards, Kickboard, Comporta,
Classcharts, BehaviorFlip, Class123, or Minga come up in "Classcraft alternatives" lists. These are
solid products in their own right โ but they solve a different problem. They're behavior trackers, quiz games, or school
management tools. They don't have the RPG mechanics that made Classcraft special: customizable avatars that level up,
student powers, health points, team interdependence, boss battles, or quests with branching paths.
If all you need is a point tracker or a quiz tool, these platforms work fine. But if you loved Classcraft for the game
โ for the feeling of running an RPG or adventure in your classroom โ these won't scratch that itch.
Hobby projects that try
A handful of indie projects have popped up that attempt to recreate the Classcraft experience with actual gamification.
Some offer predefined static images instead of customizable characters. Others have 2D interfaces that feel more like a
spreadsheet than a game. A few have tried to add RPG-style features, but they lack the polish, visual quality, and
game-feel that made Classcraft engaging for students. And some make things overly complex โ requiring teachers to invest
an unreasonable amount of time just to set things up and keep them running, which defeats the purpose entirely.
The biggest challenge these projects miss is sustained student engagement. It's not enough to get students excited in
the first week โ you need them to stay engaged across an entire school year. Avatar customization and progression was
the single biggest driver of that in Classcraft. Students who could see their character grow, unlock new gear, and
express themselves through their avatar stayed invested month after month. Any system that doesn't nail this โ that
relies on static images or shallow progression โ simply isn't a viable long-term replacement.
The reality is that building something like Classcraft requires more than just coding โ it takes real product
development skills. Thoughtful UX design, polished visuals, intuitive workflows, and actual game development experience
are what make the difference between a tool teachers love and one they abandon after a week. That level of craft only
comes from professional experience, and it's exactly why I built ClassMana.
What about features ClassMana doesn't have?
A couple of Classcraft features didn't make the cut โ intentionally:
- Kudos (peer recognition) โ Teachers consistently reported that Kudos was too time-intensive and didn't provide enough value to justify the effort. ClassMana focuses on the features that actually move the needle in the classroom.
- Native mobile apps โ With today's web technology, a dedicated app isn't necessary. ClassMana works seamlessly on any device โ phone, tablet, or desktop โ right from the browser, with no install required.
Teachers are choosing ClassMana
ClassMana has quickly grown into the most popular Classcraft replacement, with the largest community of any alternative.
Built by a game developer using real game technology, ClassMana picks up where Classcraft left off โ and pushes it
further. Here's why:
- Biggest community โ The ClassMana Facebook group is the largest active community of teachers using a Classcraft alternative, sharing tips, ideas, and classroom stories every day.
- Recommended by the petition โ The Change.org petition to save Classcraft, signed by a thousand teachers, now recommends ClassMana as the go-to replacement.
- Former Classcraft ambassadors on board โ Several official ex-Classcraft ambassadors have joined ClassMana and now champion it in their schools and communities.
- Went viral on TikTok โ ClassMana caught fire on TikTok, with teachers sharing videos of ClassMana in action, showing off the tools and their students' excitement. One video even surpassed a million views, leading to a massive surge in signups.
- Massive adoption โ As of April 2026, over 95,000 teachers have signed up, creating more than 40,000 classes with 300,000+ students.
- Students love it โ If you let your students choose, they'd pick ClassMana every time. The animated 3D avatars, boss battles, and game-like visuals are so close to the gaming they already love that it doesn't feel like school โ it feels like play.
Best for: Teachers who loved Classcraft's full RPG experience and want the closest possible replacement with
avatars, powers, health, teams, boss battles and quests.
Price: Free teacher tools. Premium for full Class Adventure features (coming soon).
